What You'll Be Doing

Mentoring

New students are paired with a graduate-level mentor for their first year at Appalachian State. The mentors help provide the students with academic help, career exploration assistance, emotional support and cultural experiences. Students meet with their mentor each week for 30 minutes. New students will meet their mentor at the Welcome Meeting on August 17.

Class

All ACCESS freshmen will enroll in ACCESS Seminar. This course is designed to help you create greater success in college and in life. It is a 2-credit, elective course taught by Beth Marsh and Adam Warren. Class discussions, readings, assignments, and projects are all designed to help you think about your goals and how you will achieve them. It is also a great place to meet other ACCESS students.

Study Hall

All university students need a quiet and distraction-free space to study and work, but this type of space can be hard to find. We require new ACCESS students to attend one hour of study hall each week during their first year. The study hall gives you an hour of uninterrupted, quiet study time to get caught up on work during the middle of the day.

Workshops

Workshops offer our students the opportunity to increase their knowledge about such topics as career development, community involvement, successful final exam strategies, financial aid, and study abroad options. Workshops are offered on select Mondays in the Fall and Spring and are required.  Workshops are offered and sometimes required for upperclassmen as well.

Advising

Each ACCESS student is assigned to an ACCESS academic advisor. The advisor will assist the student with academic decisions, selecting classes, and understanding academic policies until he/she graduates. The main goal of academic advising is academic success, and ACCESS advisors are committed to this goal.
