Working on Campus (Work Study)

  • What is Work Study?

Work Study (https://studentemployment.appstate.edu/federal-work-study) is a federal program providing students who qualify  through Financial Aid the opportunity to work and earn money during college.

Work Study is a grant program that awards a set amount to students who qualify.  For ACCESS Scholars the work study maximum amount is $1000/semester.

We strongly encourage all of our students to do a work study in their first year at Appalachian State.  Research has shown that students who work 9-10 hours/week while enrolled get better grades than those who do not work (or who work too many hours).

  • Does Work Study pay off my tuition?

The ACCESS Scholarship, as well as grants and scholarship will pay for tuition/fees and room/board.  Money earned through Federal Work Study goes directly to the student just like a paycheck.

  • Do I get to choose where I would like to work?

Yes! Follow the steps below to begin applying for Work Study positions on campus:

  1. Build your Resume

You may use the resume you submitted for the ACCESS Scholarship, but we suggest reviewing your resume and updating it.  Here are Four Steps to building a great resume provided by the Career Development Center at Appalachian State.  The link contains a resume template.
